Inspiration from Nancy Krieger’s 2006 lecture at Washington University

What would you like to know about me? I was born to a Bulgarian mother and a Namibian father and I looking at my own life, I realise even more why social determinants for having a good education came together. I did not wake up one day and decide to go to Princeton University and do molecular biology, nor did I wake the next day with high enough grades to be admitted. These attributes must predate my birth as certain genetic and epigenetic (traits that are passed on from mother to her offspring as a function of the mother’s life history) factors influenced my destiny already during conception. And we should not forget the social conditions in Bulgaria and Namibia, which my parents inhabited and into which I was raised. So my conviction of always wanting to be a scientist came is part of who I am, part of my history as an organism.
